In the run-up to the Bihar Assembly elections, significant gifts are being announced for women. The Nitish Kumar government is already providing ₹10,000 each to women associated with Jeevika groups for self-employment under the Chief Minister's Women Employment Scheme. Now, the RJD, seeking to return to power, has made a significant announcement for Jeevika Didis. Tejashwi Yadav has announced that if he comes to power, he will grant Jeevika Didis permanent employee status and increase their salary to ₹30,000 per month.
According to Tejashwi's announcement, CM Didis, among the Jeevika Didis, will be granted permanent employee status. Their loans will also be waived. Currently, approximately 14 million women are associated with Jeevika groups in Bihar. The Bihar Rural Livelihoods Mission (BRM) was launched in 2006 with World Bank assistance. This scheme aims to strengthen the economic status of women by forming small self-help groups (SHGs). Women who join these groups are called Jeevika Didi.
Benefits of Becoming a Jeevika Didi
The Nitish Kumar government provides up to ₹10,000 and up to ₹2 lakh for self-employment. Furthermore, women groups receive small loans and organize Saras Melas for them. In this way, women are strengthening their financial situation. Many Jeevika groups started on a small scale and are now establishing themselves as large companies.
