Purba Medinipur (West Bengal) [India], October 13 (ANI): BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, slammed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee over her controversial remarks on the Durgapur gangrape case, and said, "shame, Mamata Banerjee, shame."
Speaking to ANI on Sunday, Suvendu Adhikari said, "...The Chief Minister has made it clear that it is not right for women to go out of their homes at night and every daughter-sister should arrange for her own security. Shame, Mamata Banerjee, shame."
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made a controversial remark advising colleges not to allow girls to go outside at night.
"I'm shocked to see the incident, but private medical colleges also should take care of their students, and especially girls. The girls should not be allowed to go outside (college) at night. They have to protect themselves also. There is a forest area. Police are searching all the people," Banerjee said.
Later, Chief Minister Banerjee claimed that the media "distorted" her words.
"The media distorted my words. You ask me a question, I answer it, and then you distort it. Do not try this kind of politics.", CM Banerjee said in Alipurduar.
A second-year student of a private medical college was allegedly gangraped in Durgapur. The victim, a medical student, is from Jaleswar, Odisha.
According to the victim's father, a medical student was taken by one of her classmates under the pretence of going to get something to eat. However, two or three other men arrived and raped her. The classmate abandoned her and fled.
On Sunday, three persons arrested for allegedly raping a medical student in West Bengal's Durgapur were remanded to 10 days' police custody by a local court here.
The gangrape has sparked massive outrage, with the Bharatiya Janata Party accusing the Mamata Banerjee government of failing to protect women, while the ruling TMC slammed the BJP for allegedly politicising the incident. (ANI)
