Navratri is one of the most sacred and vibrant Hindu festivals, celebrated with devotion, fasting, music, and prayer. Over nine nights, each day is dedicated to a distinct form of Maa Durga. Shardiya Navratri in 2025 begins on 22 September, and the second day, 23 September, is devoted to Maa Brahmacharini, the goddess of penance and devotion.
The Significance of Day 2 of Navratri
On this day, worshippers honour Maa Brahmacharini, who embodies tapasya (austerity), self-control, and dedication. She is seen in a calm and graceful form, dressed in a white saree, carrying a japa mala (rosary) in her right hand and a kamandal (water pot) in her left. Known as Devi Tapasvini and Devi Yogini, she symbolises wisdom, knowledge, and inner strength.
It is believed that praying to her removes obstacles linked with Mangal Dosha in one’s horoscope. She also governs the Sacral Chakra, which represents creativity and emotional balance.
Navratri Colour of the Day
The second day of Navratri is associated with the colour red. Devotees offer hibiscus flowers to the goddess, a symbol of energy, love, and determination.
The Story of Maa Brahmacharini
According to sacred texts, Maa Brahmacharini is a form of Goddess Parvati. Born as the daughter of King Himavan, she resolved to marry Lord Shiva and embarked on a long and severe penance.
For a thousand years, she survived on fruits and flowers, another thousand on green leaves and herbs, and later on just Bilva Patra leaves. Eventually, she gave up both food and water, showing immense strength and patience. Seeing her devotion, the gods and sages blessed her, giving her the name Aparna, and she was united with Lord Shiva.
