Woman killed for Rs 36 lakh dowry
Greater Noida police said on Saturday that a woman was allegedly assaulted, dragged by her hair and set on fire by her husband and in-laws in front of her young son and elder sister. The horrifying incident took place on Thursday night in Sirsa village, under Kasna Police Station limits.
The victim, identified as Nikki, aged in her mid-30s, was married to Vipin in 2016 and the couple had a son. According to PTI, two videos of the attack have surfaced online. In one video, a man and woman can be seen dragging Nikki by her hair and assaulting her. In another, she is seen limping down the stairs after being set ablaze.
Eyewitness account by son
The victim’s six-year-old son witnessed the attack and described it to police. “Meri mumma ke upar kuch dala, fir unko chanta mara fir lighter se aag laga di,” he said, recalling how they poured something on his mother, slapped her, and set her on fire.
Nikki’s elder sister Kanchan, who is married into the same family, recorded parts of the incident on her phone. She alleged that the assault was linked to a dowry demand of Rs 36 lakh.
“We were beaten and tortured for the last many days for dowry. They were demanding Rs 36 lakh. On Thursday night, they hit her on her neck and head, threw acid and set her on fire. Our children were in the same house. They tortured me as well. I could not do anything,” she said, holding her nephew in her arms.
Kanchan further claimed that the in-laws wanted Nikki out of the way so that Vipin could remarry.
Police response
Greater Noida Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (ADCP) Sudhir Kumar said, “On August 21, we received a call from Fortis Hospital informing us that a woman with burn injuries had been admitted and was referred to Safdarjung Hospital. Police immediately left for Safdarjung Hospital, but the woman succumbed to her injuries before the team could reach.”
The officer confirmed that a case has been registered based on Kanchan’s complaint. “Vipin has been arrested and teams have been formed to nab the other accused family members. They will be arrested soon,” he said.
The post-mortem has been conducted, and Nikki’s family has performed her last rites.
