What are the beliefs?
Mahant Swami Kameshwaranand Vedantacharya explained that Goddess Lakshmi visits every home on the night of Diwali. Therefore, decorating the home with lamps is considered very auspicious. Some people light clay lamps, while others light flour lamps. Three main reasons have been cited for lighting flour lamps: first, to get relief from financial crisis; second, to get rid of domestic disputes; and third, to remove obstacles related to marriage. According to Vastu Shastra, lighting flour lamps is considered extremely beneficial for all three purposes.

In which direction should the lamp be lit?
According to Swami Kameshwaranand Ji, the direction in which lamps are lit is also very important. Lamps should always be lit facing east or north, as these directions symbolize knowledge and prosperity. The south direction is the direction of Yamaraj; therefore, a lamp is lit there only when lighting lamps for ancestors. Lighting a lamp on the right side when entering the house is considered auspicious. If one lights a lamp with yellow mustard oil or ghee, facing the house and lighting the lamp on the left side brings happiness and prosperity.

Flour lamps remove obstacles.
Swami Ji explains that if there is increasing distress in the home, such as discord between husband and wife, or obstacles in the marriage of children, lighting flour lamps on the night of Diwali removes all these obstacles. There is a special tradition of lighting four-sided flour lamps on the day of Naraka Chaturdashi, also known as Chhoti Diwali. It is said that this pleases Yamaraj and closes the gates of hell. This lamp protects us from untimely death and brings light to our lives.

Earthen lamps are also auspicious.
Earthen lamps are also considered symbols of purity and sanctity. Keeping the lamp facing the street while leaving the house is also considered auspicious. This brings wealth, happiness, and peace to the home. On the night of Diwali, worshipping Lord Ganesha, Lakshmi, and Kubera, along with reciting the 16 mantras of the Sri Sukta or the Kalak Dhara source, brings wealth.

Make the Swastika and Om symbols with cow ghee and vermillion on the main door of the house.
Swamiji advises against resorting to any tantric practices to attain Lakshmi. Make the Swastika and Om symbols with cow ghee and vermillion on the main door of the house… this is considered very auspicious. In this way, lighting flour lamps on the night of Diwali is not just a tradition but a symbol of prosperity, peace and happiness which removes darkness and fills life with light.
