Baby, 2, found wandering streets in dirty nappy before more 'horrific' discovery

Police said they found a "horrific" sight after going to the home of a two-year-oldgirl seen “running near a busy street” wearing just a soiled nappy.

Alexandrea Prewett, 33, and Benito Lopez, 35, have both been arrested and face charges after their daughter was found by police sitting on a kerb in Bexar County, Texas. She was described as being "extremely dirty, unkempt, and was wearing a heavily soiled diaper". Neighbours had called the police after seeing the couple’s toddler "running near a busy street before entering a nearby residence”.

And police from Bexar County Sheriff’s Office entered the home where the child was living with her parents and found it was in a "horrific" state due to the dirt and rubbish. A report described “filthy hoarding conditions”.

It also stated: "Investigators detect an overpowering odour of urine and animal faeces. Piles of trash are observed throughout the living room and kitchen areas.

"In the kitchen totting food, trash and dead (cock)roaches are found on countertops and floors. Conditions inside the home deemed horrific."

Prewitt is understood to have confirmed to officers that she was the mother of the two-year-old girl and was detained along with Lopez who later returned to the property. They face charges of child endangerment and were released on bail.

A statement on Facebook from the Sheriff's Office read: "On Sunday, August 17, 2025, at 10:18 a.m., deputies responded to a report of a found child in the 4100 block of Eutrophic Circle. Upon arrival, deputies contacted the caller, who reported seeing a young female child running near a busy street before entering a nearby residence.

"Deputies soon located the child sitting on the sidewalk. She appeared extremely dirty, unkempt, and was wearing a heavily soiled diaper. Deputies entered the residence and discovered filthy hoarding conditions. They made contact with an adult female, later identified as Alexandra Prewett, who confirmed she was the child’s mother.

"Due to the unsafe living conditions, deputies detained Prewett. The child’s father, Benito Lopez, later arrived at the residence and was also detained. Medical personnel evaluated the child, and EMS transported her to a nearby hospital for precautionary medical care."

Worryingly the local police force said that it had several reports recently of kids "wandering from their homes unnoticed". "In recent weeks, BCSO has responded to several calls involving young children wandering from their homes unnoticed. While not every case results in an arrest, each is thoroughly investigated, and arrests will be made when warranted," continued the statement from the Sheriff's Office.

"This incident serves as a reminder for parents and guardians to ensure proper child safety measures are in place to prevent such dangerous situations. Thankfully, this child was located safely and did not suffer injuries while wandering in the street."
