Now, an expert has revealed how conscription could work on home soil, explaining that a "well-trained resourceful UK land army of young and spirited Brits will deter Putin where nukes fear to tread."
According to the newly published National Security Strategy report, facing the danger of nuclear weapons will be "more complex than it was even in the Cold War" - a prospect that will no doubt send a shudder down the spine of those who lived through these uncertain times.

Prince Harry and King Charles' feud takes fresh turn in 'passport fury'
Prince Harry came into difficulty when trying to get British passports for his two children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four, it has been claimed - but the saga is said to have left royal insidersbewildered.
The Duke of Sussex allegedly faced delays when it came to procuring the official documentation for his children, in part due to his desire to use their royal titles in the passports.
According to a report by The Guardian, Harry and his wife Meghan were told that the passports had been delayed for their kids due to technical issues, so they re-applied through the 24-hour service that is available - only for the required meeting to be cancelled.

TUI tourists slam food in Corfu hotel - but were astonished by firm's responseA British couple were kicked out of their hotelin Corfu and denied boarding on their flight back to the UK.
Paul Bell and wife Ellie booked a package deal with TUI but their trip was cut short - and they were barred from flying home - after TUI said they used "aggressive and disrespectful language" in the restaurant. Paul, 64, and 65-year-old Ellie spent several hundreds pounds to continue their holiday in a different hotel in Corfu, a new flight home and their own transfers.
Now the couple, from North Shields, Tyne and Wear, say they will never use TUI again, as they deny shouting in the restaurant of the Terezas Hotel in Sidari, where they had enjoyed a stay before. The exchange is said to have happened after Ellie had complained to the manager about the quality of the food, which Paul described as "tepid" and "not very nice".

Sir Elton John picks a side in Beckham feud with message to godson BrooklynFinally, Sir Elton John risked being part of the Beckham family feud as he paid tribute to his godson, Brooklyn Beckham, and his wife, Nicola Peltz. The former aspiring photographer, 26, and his socialite wife, 30, recently celebrated five years since they got engaged with gushing social media posts.
Along with a photo of the two looking lovey-dovey, Brooklyn wrote: "It’s been 5 years since I asked this beautiful woman to marry me xx best decision ever x I love you so much." Many celebrated the pair's huge milestone in the comment section, including Sir Elton - who is godfather to Brooklyn and Romeo.
