What Experts SayDr. Vijay Singhal, Senior Consultant, Dermatology at Shri Balaji Action Medical Institute, New Delhi, explains that washing hair with excessively hot water for a long time can damage both the scalp and the hair.
He says, “Hot water removes the scalp’s natural oils (sebum), which are essential for keeping hair soft and hydrated. As a result, hair becomes dry, weak, and more prone to breakage. It can also trigger scalp issues like itching, dandruff, and irritation.”
Dr. Singhal further adds that this effect is even worse for people who color their hair. “Hot water causes hair color to fade faster and makes it look lifeless,” he notes.
How to Wash Hair Safely in WinterTo protect your hair from winter damage, follow these expert-recommended tips:
Use Lukewarm Water, Not Hot Water
Always prefer lukewarm water while washing your hair. It’s warm enough to clean the scalp but gentle enough to retain natural oils.
Choose a Mild Shampoo and Conditioner
Use sulfate-free or mild shampoo and always follow up with a moisturizing conditioner. This helps restore hydration and shine.
Oil Before Washing
Apply warm coconut, almond, or olive oil a few hours before shampooing. This helps lock in moisture and prevents dryness caused by winter air.
Be Gentle While Drying
Avoid rubbing your hair with a towel. Instead, pat it dry gently or wrap it in a soft cotton towel to absorb excess water.
Wash Hair 1–2 Times a Week
