As the demand for electric vehicles (EVs) accelerates in India, French automaker Renault is treading cautiously. Despite a growing EV market and increasing competition, Renault has yet to introduce its first electric car in the country. However, that’s about to change—but not immediately. According to Renault India MD Venkatram Mamillapalle, the company is waiting for the right time and the right ecosystem before jumping into the EV space.
Ecosystem Before EV: Renault’s Cautious ApproachSpeaking to the media, Mamillapalle emphasized that Renault is closely monitoring the maturity of the Indian EV ecosystem. The automaker wants to ensure that critical infrastructure such as charging stations, battery support, affordability, and customer readiness is well-established before launching its EVs.
He clarified, “We have the technology—be it hybrid, ethanol, or electric—everything is readily available. What we’re waiting for is the right timing and a supportive ecosystem.”
Recent Launch: New Triber at ₹6.29 LakhOn July 23, Renault launched the facelifted version of its 7-seater MPV, Triber, priced from ₹6.29 lakh (ex-showroom). While this launch reflects Renault’s ongoing commitment to affordable mobility, it also shows that their focus remains on the ICE (internal combustion engine) market for now.
What's Next: Four New Launches in Two YearsRenault currently offers three models in India:
-
Kiger (sub-compact SUV)
-
Triber (MPV)
-
Kwid (entry-level hatchback)
Looking ahead, the company plans to launch four new products over the next two years, beginning with the new Kiger, which is already in development. The product pipeline also includes multiple powertrain options—from CNG to electric—hinting at a diversified portfolio that addresses both fuel efficiency and sustainability.
When Will Renault’s First Electric Car Launch?Although the company has not revealed a specific launch date, Renault India confirmed that plans are in motion. The electric car will arrive "at the appropriate time", after evaluating market readiness and infrastructure development.
Mamillapalle reassured that Renault is fully prepared on the technological front, and once the supporting ecosystem aligns, they will roll out their EVs in a phased manner.
