Donald Trump is hosting what has been dubbed a "big, beautiful" event this evening, as he seeks to push through a piece of significant legislation to be voted on in the Senate. This is after what has become known as the "big beautiful bill" narrowly went through the House of Representatives by only a single vote. It aims to cut taxes, such as eliminating those on social security income. There would also be increased restrictions on who can receive Medicaid, as well as an increased cap on state and local taxes.
States would be forced to contribute more to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), and end taxes on tips and overtime pay. There is also a call for an end to federal clean energy tax credits, imposed by President Joe Biden. But Senate Republicans have suggested phasing these out more slowly. Trump also wants to get a new border security package approved, which would inject around $150billion (£109billion) into his mass deportation agenda over the next four years.
The US President's press secretary, Karoline Leavitt said earlier today that he will "host a One Big Beautiful Event in the East Room, to rally Republicans to get the One Big Beautiful Bill across the finish line". "This is the largest tax cut for working and middle class Americans in history," she added.
