There are a number of jobs to do in the garden this autumn to create a beautiful seasonal display, as well as to prepare for the sunnier months next year. The cold weather, darker nights, and shorter days mean a lot of the plants and flowers which flourished in your garden over the summer will be dying off.
The spectacular autumn colours can turn your garden into a beautiful display of red, orange, and gold - but there are a few things you need to do to make the most of it. Gardening inspiration and advice social media account flourishliving has posted six key jobs to do this season to make the most of the autumn weather and conditions. A video posted on TikTok provides some important advice for gardeners this season.
The video description read: "Here are 6 autumn gardening jobs you need to crack on with RIGHT NOW before it's too late. From cutting back perennials to planting for winter colour, these are the essential tasks that'll set your garden up for success.
"Don't let your garden look sad this winter. Follow Flourish for seasonal garden tips, outdoor entertaining ideas, and plant care hacks that actually work."
The first tip is to cut back roses. The video narration said: "At number one I will be giving all my roses a cut back as well as enjoying the last of the blooms for this season."
The second tip is to tidy up your garden, while the third is to pick and prepare the bulbs you plan to plant next year. The narrator said: "October is my tidying season, so I do a lot of cutting back and prepping the garden for next year. This includes picking and prepping the bulbs that I want."
Moving onto the fourth tip, the narrator said: "Crispy leaf season is well and truly here, so make sure you're picking up those leaves and that they're not going onto your new plants, in the pond, or on your lawn."
For the fifth, they said October is the last opportunity you will have to plant new bulbs before spring. "October is the last month to get those plants in the ground," they said.
"I chose these winter hardy cyclamen that are beautiful and flower throughout the cold. Thank goodness that little bit of rain has made it a lot easier to dig into the ground."
The final tip is to prioritise your mental health. The narrator said: "Dark nights and dark mornings are slowly closing in, so make sure you're getting outside for at least 10 minutes a day, so go and get that Vitamin D because your plants and your mind will thank you for it."
One viewer commented: "I'm going to plant my allium bulbs this weekend", to which Flourish replied: "That sounds like the perfect way to spend a Saturday."
Another commented: "So important to get outside when you can for a leaf crunch (and clear up!)"
