Horror in UK town as house 'explodes' and emergency services scramble to residential area

The emergency services rushed to Halifax overnight after an explosion at a house. The explosion broke out in the Spring Hall Lane area at around 11.45pm on Wednesday and impacted six houses.

A spokesperson for Northern Gas Networks said: "Our engineers were called to attend an explosion in the Spring Hall Lane area of Halifax at 12.30am this morning. We are working closely with the emergency services to the incident."

According to Yorkshire Live, an air ambulance landed at the Asda car park close to the scene. It has been confirmed that three people were taken to hospital while the occupants of 14 houses were evacuated.

West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We were called at 00.06 this morning to Spring Hall Grove to reports of an explosion. We sent five crews, plus the technical rescue and command unit.

"The explosion had affected 6 houses. Crews used large jets and an aerial ladder to extinguish the fire.

"Three people were taken to hospital. YAS and WYP also in attendance."

Pictures from the scene show huge flames roaring from the homes affected. Smoke can also be seen billowing into the air above.

It's reported that West Yorkshire Police have cordoned off Spring Hall Grove and part of Spring Hall Lane. Emergency services remain at the scene on Thursday morning.

West Yorkshire Police said: "Police were called to Coventry Street, Halifax, at 12:04am this morning to a report of an explosion. Officers at the scene assisted with closing the road and evacuating the occupants of 14 houses.

"Two people from one property were taken to hospital with serious injuries and a third person, from another property, has received treatment for minor injuries. The cause of the explosion remains under investigation. "
