Bedding and towels need regular washing to prevent the buildup of dead skin cells, body oils and dust mites. All of these can lead to skin irritation, allergies and even respiratory issues over a long period of time. Clean bedding also contributes to a more hygenic environment and a comfortable sleep.
How often to wash bedding and towels, as well as at what temperature, is a common debate, but cleaning enthusiasts have taken to online forums to share their thoughts. Posting on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips Facebook page, Helen Broadwater wrote: "I've seen comments about washing machine temperatures on here. People are saying they wash bedding and towels at 60C or 90C.
"The labels on mine all say 40C, should I stick to the temperature on the labels?"
Any temperature above 40C is considered a hot wash, ideal for tough stains and disinfection.
However, according to one housekeeper, this is way too hot for towels and bedding.
Gemima Reus wrote: "I'm a housekeeper, and I wash bedding and towels nearly every day. I think even 40C is too hot unless it's soiled or stained.
"I think 30C is correct, the detergent I use kills germs at this temperature. I use a natural detergent and softener we order online, and it's great."
Sue Benson added: "Agreed, I tend to stick all my laundry on a 30C unless it's super dirty and I've always found it to be fine."
Jane Burtoft commented: "I do everything at 30 and it all comes out fine. But my things are not that dirty."
Eileen Brand noted: "I think our advanced powders and liquids take care of everything at 30C, but I occasionally do higher for towels."
Washing laundry at 30C offers several benefits such as energy saving, prolonged clothing life and better colour retention.
This is especially important if you have coloured towels, which could lose their vibrancy in a hot wash.
The best guidance is to always check the care label on your bedding for specific washing instructions.
