Man dies after being struck by bus on busy A-road

A man in his 30s was struck on the A1 near Haggerston in North Northumberland on Sunday morning. The man - a pedestrian - is believed to have been in the road when he was struck by a bus travelling northbound.

Police confirmed the man was declared dead at the scene following the incident at around 5am - and the bus driver was assisting with enquiries. The man's next-of-kin have been informed and are receiving specialist support. The road was closed for several hours but has now been re-opened.

Sgt Steven Chappell, of Northumbria Police's roads policing team, said: "This is a tragic incident in which a man has tragically lost his life.

"Our thoughts remain with his family and friends as they try to come to terms with the news they have received this morning.

"Our investigation is in its early stages, and we are doing all we can to better understand what led such a tragic incident occurring.

"I encourage anyone with any information to come forward and allow us to provide this man's family with answers."

During the morning, police collision investigators were spotted at the the scene while a blue Megabus-branded coach could be seen on the road.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called to a road traffic incident on the A1 near Berwick Upon Tweed this morning (2 November) at 05:06am. We dispatched two ambulance crews and one clinical team leader to the scene."
