Murdaugh Death in the Family reviews as critics all say same thing about true crime drama

Murdaugh: Death in the Family has just started airing on Disney Plus and Hulu, and the true crime drama tells the unbelievable story of the infamous Murdaugh family from South Carolina.

Starring huge names like Jason Clarke and Brittany Snow, the series is inspired by the Murdaugh Murders Podcast by Mandy Matney.

The journalist investigated and blogged about the unfolding case of the Murdaugh murders, which ultimately led to Alex Murdaugh's incarceration.

The first three episodes have just dropped as part of a bumper premiere, with the remaining five episodes airing weekly thereafter.

Critics have all said the same thing about the drama, branding it "dull" and "uninspiring".

The Independent gave the series just two stars, feeling it "fails to shed any new light".

Katie Rosseinsky said: "Death in the Family is solidly but uninspiringly made, staying true to the hallmarks of prestige true crime."

She did praise the main cast for their performances, but added: "Even these winning performances can't distract from the overwhelming sense that the series itself feels unnecessary."

The story has been adapted a number of times before, with many viewers feeling there was nothing to differenciate latest series from others.

USA Today called it "meaningless, mediocre and maddening", with Kelly Lawler adding: "Exploitative, dull and lacking a point of view, Murdaugh is a new lowpoint in our collective murder obsession.

"But probably only for a short time. There's always a new true crime story that Hollywood will be eager to retell."

RogerEbert.com gave the series 2.5 stars, once again praising the performances, but branding it "a bit of a slog".

They added: "The performances are outstanding, but the production values are underwhelming, and the saga is stretched and padded to eight episodes when four or five would have been sufficient.

"This once-shocking story has been told so many times that Death in the Family doesn't pack the same visceral wallop anymore."

However, some critics on Rotten Tomatoes offered a more positive response, with Screen Rant sharing: "Murdaugh is the last adaptation of this odd true crime story that anyone will ever need. In that case, the Hulu series closed the book on a high note."
