Netflix has just made a colossal announcement about the 'best show of 2025' that will undoubtedly have fans jumping for joy.
One of the streaming giant's most popular show of the year, Department Q, has officially been renewed for a second season, with the crime series given the go-ahead for another thrilling chapter.
The binge-worthy series is based on Jussi Adler-Olsen's novel collection, with the inaugural season offering its unique take on the first book, The Keeper of Lost Causes.
It remains to be seen which, if any, of the novels will form the basis for the upcoming season.
Fans are likely to anticipate that the series will follow the sequence of the books, potentially adapting the narrative from The Absent One, the second in the ten-part Dept Q series.
However, one significant change for the Netflix adaptation will persist into the second season: the series will continue to be set and filmed in the Scottish capital, Edinburgh, following the success of the first season, reports the Mirror.
Matthew Goode will reprise his role as DCI Carl Morck, leading his team of misfits, including fan favourites Alexej Manvelov as Akram and Leah Byrne as Rose, alongside Jamie Sives as Hardy.
In the first season, we saw Goode's Morck reluctantly taking charge of his own department, viewing it as a PR stunt while also grappling with his past at home and work.
Tasked with previously unsolvable cases, this darkly comic and gripping series offers all the thrills of a procedural, delving into the intricate mysteries surrounding both the investigations and the detectives tackling them.
The debut series of Dept Q dominated Netflix's Global Top Ten for six weeks running.
Following this announcement, the programme's director and writer Scott Frank, who also created acclaimed hits The Queen's Gambit and Godless, remarked: " I'm grateful to the folks at Netflix, as well as our shining cast and crew, for once more risking their careers to enable my folly."
Matthew Goode commented: "I'd like to thank Netflix for giving us the opportunity to further investigate Department Q's storylines. We have a wonderful cast and crew, headed by our resident genius Scott Frank. I cannot wait to read what comes from his magic quill!".
The first series boasts an impressive 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, earning widespread acclaim from both critics and viewers.
One critic declared: "What makes Dept Q stand out is its explosive plot twists. There's one in the opening scene and they continue to detonate, upending expectations."
Another wrote: "Very British-TV in spirit, though set in Edinburgh, Netflix's Department Q is more than a serviceable crime thriller. It's an engaging watch, with the right amount of camaraderie, suspense, and mystery to keep you glued to the screen."
Viewers are equally captivated, with one writing online: "A very strong contender for Best Show of 2025. An absolutely gripping crime thriller. The first and last scenes of the opening episode are both utterly shocking... if you're not hooked by then, check to see if you have a pulse."
Another viewer commented: "I'll admit, Department Q starts off a bit slow and I wasn't immediately hooked. But once it finds its rhythm, this Nordic thriller becomes absolutely addictive. I ended up binge-watching the entire series in one day - something I haven't done in ages."
Dept Q is streaming on Netflix.
