Homeowners have been urged to try a simple 30p trick to deter unwanted visitors. According to experts, using the peel of a certain fruit could keep spiders away.
As the weather gets colder and wetter it becomes common to see more of the eight-legged creatures in your home than usual. This is because spiders will come into buildings looking for dry, warm conditions.
September is also spider mating season, with male spiders coming into homes in search of females. With all this in mind, it is worth taking some steps to spider-proof your home if you are not a fan of them.
Luckily this can be simple and doesn't have to cost a lot of money. Experts have explained that spiders do not like strong smells. This includes the smell of citrus fruits.

For this reason, you could try an easy 30p hack - using the leftover peel of a lemon, or other citrus fruits you have at home.
House Beautiful explains: "Spiders dislike citrus fruits, including lemons, oranges and grapefruits. If you want to keep them out of your home, mix your leftover lemon, lime or orange peel with water to create a paste. Rub over your windowsill and say goodbye to the creepy crawlies for good."
At the time of reporting, you can buy a lemon for an average of 30p each. Speaking to the magazine, Mike Norton - trade and projects director at Magnet Trade - said: "This is one of the easiest and most effective tricks, costing around 14p compared to a £10 ready-made spider repellent.
"Rub lemon peels all over the windowsills or anywhere spiders tend to perch, such as on skirting boards and bookshelves. The strong citrus scent will repel them away and give your home a lovely fresh scent."
Other strong smells are also meant to deter spiders.
The following plants could help keep them at bay for this reason:
- Basil
- Rosemary
- Lavender
- Mint
- Chrysanthemums
Other tips for deterring spiders include tidying away any potential hiding places, regularly vacuuming, closing all windows and doors at night, and turning off lights.
