A female traffic constable in Latur city has sparked controversy after a video surfaced showing her slapping and verbally abusing three young women riding triple-seat on a two-wheeler which is a clear violation of traffic rules.
The incident took place at Renapur Naka and came to light on Monday after the video was circulated widely on social media.
In the footage, the constable, Pranita Musne, could be seen confronting the women, accusing them of rash driving. She further proceeded to slap one of them and use abusive language.
Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Musne, who has been with the traffic department for two-and-a-half years, admitted to the assault but defended her actions as being driven by concern for road safety.
“I was going for my duty after dropping off my daughters for tuition classes, and saw three women riding a two-wheeler in a rash manner,” she said, quoted by PTI.
She said that upon asking them to be careful, the girls asked her to mind her own business.
“They continued the unsafe ride and and one of the women riding pillion was not even sitting properly.”
Musne claimed she followed them and stopped them after a state transport bus blocked their way. It was then, she said, that she struck one of the women.
“I slapped the woman,” she said explaining that at the time, she was acting as a mother and not like a constable.
“The language that I used was also wrong and I apologise to the women and their parents. But my intention was not wrong.”
Local police officials have not yet issued a statement regarding the incident.
