Father of the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case’s victim has moved to Calcutta High Court against a lower court order that barred his lawyers from visiting the crime scene.
In his petition, the father further claimed that besides Sanjay Roy, there were other individuals present when the crime occurred on 9 August last year. Roy has been convicted by the trial court for the rape and murder of the doctor and sentenced to remain in prison until the end of his natural life.
The plea argues that an independent examination of the location is vital to help the court identify any material lapse in investigation. The petitioner has sought permission for his lawyer, Phiroze Edulji, and six junior advocates to inspect the site at the state-run hospital for two hours.
He has urged the high court to overturn the Sealdah court’s 9 July decision refusing such access.
The body of the young on-duty doctor was discovered in the seminar room of the north Kolkata hospital on 9 August 2024, sparking protests across the country.
Roy, a former civic volunteer with the city police, was convicted by the Sealdah sessions court for the rape and murder, and handed a sentence that will keep him behind bars for the rest of his life.
The Calcutta High Court is expected to take up the matter early next week before a single bench, according to the petitioner’s counsel.
